I'm a college student who recently started to collect watches and would like to know if there are any quality, well-known brands that you would like to recommend that won't break my pockets too much.
There are several well-known brands that I would recommend to you. Tag Heuer is a very well-known brand in the industry and has a reasonable entry level price point for both men and women. If you are able to spend a little more money, Breitling and Cartier are currently two of the biggest names in the watch world.
Breitling's Colt model, available in both a quartz movement and an automatic self-winding movement, retails for less than $2,000 on a calfskin leather strap with a tang buckle. On an alligator leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet, the watch would be a couple hundred dollars more expensive. Breitling's other most popular models, such as their chronomat evolution or their Bentley series models, escalate in retail price to $4,000 and up.
Cartier has been an established brand for many years as well. Cartier makes watches in the $2,000 price range but most of their watches are more expensive. Arguably their most popular model, the roadster, retails for $4200 and is worn by both men and women. Their most popular ladies models, such as the tank francais, have a retail price of a little over $3,000.
An additional brand that I would recommend is Bell & Ross. Bell & Ross watches have only been around since 1992 but they have become increasingly popular every year. They have a very distinct look and are extremely appealing to some people. They make both a 42 mm watch and a 46 mm watch. Their newest model, the BR 02, should be a great success as well. The entry level retail price on Bell & Ross watches is $3,000.
Lastly, Hamilton and Oris are arguably the most reputable brands in the industry for lesser expensive watches. Both companies make a wide variety of pieces for a retail price of less than $1,000.
